Always Have a Book
Over the last 5-6 years I’ve read a lot of books, probably in the
range of 300-400.
Book learning isn’t everything–there are a lot of things you need
to experience and practice to learn.
But, books are still wonderful and effective teachers. I’ve been
able to get enough ideas for improving my life to write over 800
articles, largely through reading a lot of books.
Not just self-help or business classics either. Science, history
and even fiction are often more valuable since they force you to
think about issues in different ways, expanding those connections.
I’m a firm believer that if your education never goes beyond the
textbooks you read in university, you’ll probably fall behind the
rigorous auto-didacts that enjoy consuming new ideas in their spare
time.
Reading isn’t always the easiest habit to maintain. It doesn’t have
the same seductive call as watching television or surfing the net.
It doesn’t have the same urgency as all the errands and homework
you need to do.
However, if there is one habit that has helped me read more books it
is simply this: always have a book.
Always have a book you’re reading in your spare time and keep it in
a prominent place. That way, when you’re bored or temporarily
unoccupied, you’ll be able to read.
One step further is to carry the book with you, so you’ll have some
reading you can do when waiting in lines or taking your daily bus
commute.
Books can’t teach you everything, but they can teach a lot.
